A great way to fly...

A good friend reminded me that I should tell this story...it's not sexual in nature...so you people may not be interested.

Actually....my intro was not entirely correct...though the story itself is sex-free...the reason we even have this story is because of sex...

A woman friend wondered if she could squirt and of course I jumped at the chance to help out...we tried different approaches but every time she came close (heh heh...pun intended...), she would involuntarily suppress the feeling...

I thought an inducement may be the way to go...so I promised to fly her out to the country for a nice picnic if she would just 'let go'...

That she did (or we won't have this story....) and it was a glorious squirt...none of those weak dribble for her...it was face-smacking good...in fact...some flew over my head...it was that powerful...

To keep my promise, I went away and planned a whole day event...we would fly out to a small airfield not far from Augusta...that's the south west tip of Western Australia...on the way, we'll fly beside the limestone cliffs above beaches and maybe get to whale-watch, if we were lucky...this airfield is also special because it is surrounded on three sides by seriously tall trees and the side not, opens out to the ocean over vertical cliffs...with a rather spectacular view of the Indian ocean...I can't think of a better place for a picnic....then on our way back, we'll stop by another airfield along Margaret river...do a little sight-seeing and wine-shopping, before heading home...

With the idea in mind, I did the route planning and aircraft selection...though the Mooney flies faster, saving both time and money, it has a low wing configuration which will hinder sight-seeing...while the Cessna flies slower, costing a little more even though it is cheaper by the hour, it has a high-wing design which gives better view below...however, the main factor came into play...the endurance of the aircrafts...with the time spent in the air...I was forced to make my choice.

I spent around 3 hours to work on a map, the route to fly through...refuel points if needed...all the frequencies and agencies to talk to throughout the flight...areas to avoid...emergency landing strips available and a million other minor details...it was fun just doing the planning...

The next morning, I picked her up at her place and we put together 2 boxes of stuff we'd be brining with us...lot's of good food and drinks...okie...non-alcoholic drinks...grape and apple juices bottled like wine...heh heh...it's all an image isn't it...and a couple of sick bags just for her...

We parked at the airport and I went to get the latest meteorological information...all the wind directions and speeds will affect how we should fly...weather, temperatures and pressures along the route etc etc...

We loaded our stuff into the aircraft after I faxed out the amended flight plan ...I did my pre-flight checks and showed her around the aircraft...heh heh...she was a little freaked out that a small aircraft has an escape hatch too...a tiny one...

Generally, the weather was fabulous...however, being 9 degrees outside, it was a little colder than I'd like...and there's a cold front ahead too...well...flying cannot depend on perfect weather...where's the fun in that right??

I made some calls to the destination airfields to make sure they are ready for us and to ask the conditions there...was assured that all is good and we should have a wonderful time since we had planned for a picnic...cool....I mean...cold...

We got into the aircraft and I fired her up (the aircraft...not my friend...though she was already quite fired up...) while doing all the usual checks...once flight-plan clearance was given, I taxied us to the holding point...everything was normal so I asked permission for take off...

The tower controller on duty is a mate of mine and he decided to give me a hard time...we chatted for a while over the radio and he asked about our plans...on hearing about the picnic, he wanted to come along...heh heh...no way Jose....

Reluctantly, he gave us the take off clearance...I turned to her and let her know...it's time to rock and roll....

Everything was normal so I fed in the throttle and the engine gunned into life...we rolled down the runway and lifted off when we gained enough speed...

Climbed to 2000 feet and showed her the view of the surrounding area...and as we flew over her apartment, I did a turn so she can look at it properly...she took photos but at that height, her apartment looked more like a toy building...

It was nice and cold but the air was smooth as we cruised out southwards....the sun shined brightly and the cockpit had a little greenhouse effect which was lovely...I switched one of the the radios to an ADF station so we can listen to rock and roll music....

Right at the edge of the training area, before we entered our designated airway, I asked if she was up for a few aerobatic manoeuvres...she thought it's my way to make her throw up...so she said no...heh heh heh...do I look like the kind of guy who'd take no for an answer??

The first loop was done from a height of 4000 feet and she was enthralled...more she said...so I laid it on...gave her a taste of what flying is really about...we ripped through the air with movements a bird would stop and watch....

Having had our fun, we entered the airway...because the air was smoother up at 5000 feet, we stayed there instead of descending...looking back, this could be mistake number one...

With great tunes in our ears and beautiful scenes outside...she finally agreed that flying was far more enjoyable than she had thought...

At around 2 hours into the flight, I pointed out the airstrip just to our right, that we'll be landing there in the afternoon....and the magnificent river beside it was indeed the famous river with all the vineyards...

She busied herself with photo taking and I made some radio calls ahead to confirm the status of the airfield we were going to land on in a few hours...

Everything was perfect...well...almost...there was this annoying rumbling from the engine which I did not like...still...things were going well...

I carried out my cruise checks as I had been doing every 10-15 minutes....and decided to put the engine de-ice on as the engine ran a little rough...

Another aircraft flew above us and towards the north...she waved even though I assured her that they won't be able to see us inside the cockpit...she was certainly having fun...

Just at the exact time I turned the aircarft to a new heading when it happened....the engine spurted and jerked....I reduced the throttle input and added to the mixture...the actions seemed to sooth the engine a little but not much...after a minute...it started to jump and buck again...nothing I did made it better...she was still quite calm as she thought I pulled the trick to scare her...

I climbed towards 6000 feet but on passing 5700 feet...the engine stopped...and so did her breathing....

Now that the engine seized...the aeroplane became eerily quiet...I tried to push her up another couple of hundred feet but she politely declined...

I levelled the nose and we started a steady glide from 5750 feet...my friend, meanwhile was also eerily silent...she must have freaked out so totally that she was speechless...I couldn't see her eyes through her sunglasses but I'm sure it held a healthy dose of panic...my own wasn't far off either...but then I knew we won't die because of an engine failure...my fear came more from not being cool...heh heh...

I scanned the area below us and couldn't find an airstrip we could land on...the airfield we had passed earlier was too far for us to reach, what with our current lack of thrust...all around us...fields and rivers and woods...nothing looked good enough to attempt a landing on...

As we lost height...the ground became a lot larger....I made two pan calls to alert the authorities of our trouble but wasn't sure anyone heard them...Going through the check list, I did everything I could to restart the engine...it just wouldn't turn over...

By the time we passed 3000 feet...I decided that I should stop pissing about with the starter and spend more time scouting for a landing area...

Suddenly....the radio came alive...another aircraft had heard my pan call and responded...I told him where we were and the situation we were in...he promised to relay it as he was much higher than we were...but he was too far away to see us...I asked if he knew the area and if there was a decent enough place to land...he just said sorry...

By the time we glided past 2000 feet, I knew we would be making a landing...suitable area or not...and I duly placed a mayday call...now, I have made mayday calls before...but that was in the airforce, handling multi-million-dollar aircrafts....the people on the ground had a vested interest to preserve those aircraft at their multi-million-dollar valuation, and help invariably intervened...out here, in a multi-thousand-dollar aircraft...nobody gave a shit...well...the insurance company may have a thing or two to say about this but they didn't have a bloody radio, did they??

Once a mayday call is made...a sense of finality took over...the landing was now inevitable...human has never beaten physics...gravity to be precise...and gravity didn't care if our landing was smooth or otherwise...

Beads of sweat formed on my brow...crash-landing was not something I feared...but with a passenger...it was a little more complicated...there was a list of things for her to do before, during and after landing...all of which will reduce the possibility of injuries or something more permanent...as I briefed her...I wasn't sure she was taking anything in....

Unfortunately...time and height were not on our side...I had to now concentrate on finding a landing area....so I turned the aeroplane, first to the left, then to the right...so I can inspect the area below us...

Lo and behold...the was a dirt road a few hundred yards away...though the trees would prevent a landing there...the river that ran along it appeared dry and looked possible for a short-field landing....a VERY short field landing!!

This type of aeroplanes normally use up 400-500 feet of ground from touch down to full stop...and the straight part of this dried bed looked like something around 550-600 feet...yes...I can hear you wondering...that's long enough isn't it?? Well....yes and no....unless I can touch down exactly at the beginning of the straight portion...I will run out of runway and we'll smack into the bend (and a few huge trees) on the dried-up river bed...and the riverbed may not take to our brakes as kindly as the normal tarred runways....

Still...there wasn't much of a choice...smacking into the river bed + trees at 10 knots would be favourable to smacking into a tree at 60 knots...and so I moved the aircraft into position for landing...and as we passed 700 feet and descending...I made another mayday call...this time focusing the message on our possible position...

My passenger however...sat stiffly in her seat with her head lowered as if she was praying...I had to yell at her to look outside...if she couldn't see how close we are to the ground, the drill she had to carry out cannot be done in time...and I called out the steps for her to do again as I lined us up for the impact....

We passed 300 feet and I told her to remove her sunglasses...my reason to her was so she won't get hurt from the impact...but I really wanted to see her eyes...and to know that she is not freaking out too completely....she should have known...since I was still wore mine...

She appeared alert and fairly calm under the circumstances...so I concentrated on the landing...the final approach looked good...wait...let's not be modest here...it looked great!!! With an aeroplane with no power...not many could have lined her up so perfectly...but as we descended below 150 feet...I noticed something amiss...Houston, we have a problem...

The 'dried' river bed wasn't as dry as I thought...this may complicate the landing somewhat...it will definitely affect the braking distance...as I checked to the left and right of the river...I found that the left bank may be wide enough for the wheel base and I could touch down there first...however, the downside would be that it got narrower about 200 yards or so further down...which meant that I had to roll into the wet river bed...still...not a bad option, if I could slow the aircraft down enough so not too much braking is needed later on...and IF the aeroplane doesn't tip over in the process...

The trick to a crash landing is only this...DO NOT...I mean DO NOTcrash!!!! Yes...life's full of ironies...

I did my best to touch down as lightly as possible...she later commented...and I took as the highest praise...that she didn't even feel us touching down...the aeroplane rolled and bumped on the uneven surface the minute I put her full weight (the aeroplane's...not my passenger...my passenger was and still is, not that heavy.....) onto the landing gear...and for a few uncomfortable seconds didn't seem to want to stop...then it slowed as I applied more pressure onto the brakes....

We slowed to around 30 knots before we needed to roll down to the middle of the river bed...by which time...it was totally under control...we gently come to a full stop....phew!!!

Now safely on the ground...we had time to breathe easy again...heh heh...for some reason...she walked as far as she could away from the aircraft...that is...until I told her that there are wild bears in the woods...which promptly brought her back to the a safe distance...right beside me...hugging my left arm....if she could...I was certain she would climb inside my jacket....

I opened the engine cowling to check for the possible cause for the engine failure...and told her to get stuff out from the back...since we were stuck here for a long while anyway...well...in most cases, the rescue crew gets to the place of forced landing within 6 hours...but it's not unusual for them to take up to 2 days to find the aircraft...we might as well have our picnic right by the large trees....

She spread the blanket and arranged the food and drinks...meanwhile...I found water drips below the carburetor...strange I thought...and on further investigation...I realised what had happened...the damn thing iced up...now...that should not have happened since I had the de-ice switched on...but guess what...the connection from the battery to the de-ice unit was loose...there....mystery solved...I plugged the damned thing back and cleaned out the carburetor...then made sure that everything else was in working order...

We settled down for our picnic lunch and it was great...she was in better spirit now and we joked and laughed...I threw a piece of cheese into the woods and told her I was trying to attract some bears...and she freaked out....heh heh...as far as I know...the only bears in those wooded areas aren't bears at all...they are marsupials...she was so mad...she decided to punish me and me there and then....with the sun shining through the trees...light cold wind blew around us...maybe not another person within 100 miles...and I had this girl I like lying in my arms....it was indeed good to be alive.....

After we packed up our lunch festivities...I went for a walk to check out the dirt road a hundred or so yards away...with a length of rope...I measured and found that the width was suitable for our wing-tips to clear...only just...there was perhaps a margin of 3 feet on either side...plus the total straight length measure around 900 feet when our aeroplane needed at least 600 feet for take off to clear the trees sticking out right at the end.....there's only one pilot in this world whom I know who was stupid / brave enough to run an aeroplane through there...and I was scratching his head at the time....

When I told her my plan...she looked at me with pity in her eyes...she was sure I had completely lost it...but the alternative would be to set up camp and hope the rescue crew finds us before we ran out of food...heh heh...I told her nicely....I'd leave all the food we had with her...and IF I make it back...will be able to guide the rescue people to get her later...she immediately saw the beauty of my earlier plan...

The aeroplane was hard to move around without using power...so I set up a few pulley systems...using trees as leverage to move the beast...still it was too heavy....

I had no choice but to start her up...and once the props started...we both felt a lot better...I taxied the aeroplane gingerly and moved it out of the river bed...and when I got her to the side of the bank beside the dirt road...I killed the engine again...now...using ropes and pulleys again...we moved the aeroplane slowly to the edge of the dirt road....I had to wield a seriously blunt machete to remove lumps of grass and low bushes to make way...and two hours after lunch...we got the aeroplane lined up at the beginning of the dirt road.

Some branches along the way had to be trimmed...but once done...I could see a clear line for the wing-tips to move along as I stood beside the aeroplane looking straight down the path...all was set and we packed up all the stuff we took out...

The sun shone nicely atop us and even though it was cold...we were sweaty from the work...so we took an hour off...went down to a small pond 10 minutes walk away from the dryish river bed...and cleaned ourselves up...getting totally naked was out of the question...but things got a little bit naughty nevertheless...ding ding...a re-match!!

Methinks she wanted more but she let me off...she needed me to stay awake to fly her out of there...

Once we were ready to leave...I told her to strap herself in as firmly as she can accept...if either of the wing tips hit a tree on the way out...it's very likely the whole aeroplane will flip...how badly depends on how fast we will be at impact...she did as told...and before I started the engine...she asked for a kiss...I had to unfasten myself so one of us could reach the other...we kissed for a few minutes...could be our last kiss...with anyone...

I fired the engine up...and after all the checks to make sure everything was going as planned...I made a radio call...in case anyone was around and we were so unfortunate to meet each other a few hundred feet in the air...

Because I had to keep my focus on keeping the aeroplane smack in the middle of the dirt road...so our wing tips won't touch anything on the way out...I couldn't look inside the cockpit at all...I told her to read out the speed for me...

A short field take off is one where we feed in full power...keep the brakes on...and only release the brakes when the RPM has reached the maximum....all very easy to do on a normal runway...however...due to a thing called slipstream...the aeroplane tended to yaw to one side...without getting too technical...this means that upon brakes release...the aeroplane WILL swing to one side...and the amount of rudder to feed in depends on too many factors to list out here...so luck is important that my guess on the amount of rudder fed in has to be almost perfect...remember that there are only a few feet of room for error...the cruel twist to the tale would of course be...on adjusting the rudders once I feel it was too much...I may over correct and we smash into trees on the opposite side....

Not point in worrying her pretty head with all these facts...but she knew from the beads of sweat on my forehead that she didn't get the full story on this take off...however....looking cool was not a priority at that moment...when she finally understood the manner in which to read out the speed...I winked at her...and said...as I always have....let's rock and roll....

As full power was fed in...I almost stood on the brakes...and for a few seconds, the brakes held....unfortunately...being on sand and dirt, the aeroplane started sliding forward....and off to one side...I had two options...one, pull back the power, shut down and re-align the aircraft to start again...or two...pray hard, release the brakes and hope the aeroplane doesn't rush to the trees, and that there will still be enough runway before take off is completed....

Any crazy and stupid pilot knows the answer to that...so I prayed outloud, released the brakes, fed in what I thought was the right amout of rudder and off we went, charging down the road...heh heh heh...she must have had her eyes closed as I didn't hear any speed anouncement...so I yelled at her to read out the speed...which she eventually did...on the proper rotate speed, I pulled back the yoke...lo and behold...we lifted off...

We didn't know how close we came until we landed but for the time being...everything was well...we climbed out to 1000 feet...I slowed the aircraft down and waited for any mulfuction to occur...nothing...so no news was good news...

We climbed again...up to 4000 feet this time...and I made radio contact with control...they didn't sound particularly worried nor happy to hear from us...just said hi and good to have us back...hahahaha...it was like we skipped out of the universe and is now back in one piece...well done chaps and so on...

I slowed us down even further and carried out what is called manoeuvrability checks...this is to make sure that nothing is damaged and the aeroplane will react accordingly so we can still land the sucker...all went well...

The trip back wasn't as fun-filled...and she was unable to relax...I jokingly asked if she wanted to join the mile high club and let's just say....if looks could kill, I'd be dead...

Once I thought everything was in order...I descended to 2000 feet...nice and far away from the freezing level...and we zoomed through the air merrily....

As we passed the airfield we spotted a long time ago...I asked myself if we should land and inspect everything properly...after all, we still had a couple of hours flight in front of us....no reason to get caught again when there's no runway in sight...but I wasn't sure my friend could hold out another take off...so we continued...with more prayers, of course...
